Functional Medicine — CME Lectures for Licensed Clinicians

Functional Medicine Education From A Practicing Physician. Not A Lab Company.

Until now, learning functional medicine has been too complicated, too expensive and too time consuming. You are asked to spend thousands of dollars on courses and seminars only to be taught unnecessarily complicated matrices and protocols. You are told that the only way to help your patients is to order thousands of dollars of unvalidated lab tests, then to treat your patients with dozens of expensive supplements.

There is a better way.

I’ve dedicated my career to helping patients by learning the most effective tools in functional medicine, and I want to share that knowledge and experience with you.

Don’t learn functional medicine from lab companies, wellness influencers or health coaches. Learn from a practicing MD.

Why most functional medicine training feels like a scam. (Because sometimes it is.)

You already know the pattern: doctors who stopped practicing years ago selling protocols funded by the same labs and supplement companies whose products they push. That’s not this.

✓

Every lecture is built from research and a decade of clinical outcomes, not a lab company’s slide deck.

✓

I still see patients three days a week — this isn’t theory from someone who left clinical practice.

✓

No $5,000+ certification track and no required bundles. Learn what you need, when you need it, one lecture at a time.

I highly recommend Dr. Joseph Mather’s CE program, Functional GI Foundations: A Simplified Approach to Treating Chronic GI Symptoms. Dr. Mather presents a practical, no-nonsense approach to first-line management of many common chronic GI complaints. Functional medicine has long utilized frameworks such as the 4R and 5R approaches, and there are certainly patients for whom that level of intervention is appropriate. What I appreciated about this program, however, was the emphasis on starting with a simpler foundational strategy rather than immediately moving into complex protocols. Dr. Mather builds the approach around fasting, dietary modification, and broad-spectrum probiotic therapy, with the goal of improving the gastrointestinal environment and supporting healthier microbiome function. I give Dr. Mather top marks for taking what can become an unnecessarily complicated area of functional medicine and creating an efficient, clinically practical therapeutic framework that can be adapted for both adult and pediatric patients.

Start With GI.

GI complaints are the most common consult in any functional medicine practice — so that’s where the library starts. More tracks are in development, each with its own dedicated page for doctors searching that specific topic.

This course was practical, evidence-informed, and easy to translate into clinical practice. Chronic GI symptoms can become incredibly complicated, and I really appreciated the way this course broke the evaluation and treatment process down into a simple, stepwise framework rather than making it feel even more overwhelming. I came away with several new things to incorporate into my own practice, particularly around commonly missed contributors to chronic GI symptoms and the use of specific probiotics for different clinical scenarios. The lecture was clear, concise, and engaging. I would absolutely recommend this course to clinicians who see patients with chronic bloating, IBS, diarrhea, and other persistent GI complaints and want a practical approach they can begin using right away.

I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Joe Mather in a previous clinical setting, and I've consistently been impressed by his approach to integrative GI medicine. His clinical reasoning is grounded in science and evidence, while also reflecting the depth of experience that comes from seeing complex patients in real-world practice. Importantly, his approach doesn't get distracted by the latest shiny object or over-hyped intervention that is so common in the integrative medicine space. What I find most valuable is that Dr. Mather goes beyond simply sharing pertinent research. Instead, he provides a clinical framework for how to think through complex cases and apply that evidence thoughtfully in practice. For anyone looking to develop a more sophisticated, evidence-informed approach to integrative GI and functional medicine, I highly recommend learning from him.

I'm Dr. Joe Mather.

When I was a kid, all I wanted to do was to grow up and become a doctor. So during medical school and in residency I enthusiastically learned all the guidelines, stayed up on the latest evidence, stayed late in clinic, used all the indicated medications and tried my hardest to help patients heal.

My patients didn’t get better.

They didn’t get better because conventional medicine doesn’t have the tools to address the fundamental reasons why patients develop chronic illness.

Undeterred, I jumped in to learn all that I could from functional and integrative medicine, and sure enough I started seeing better results, and true instances of healing.

Dr. Joe Mather MD, New Orleans Functional Medicine

But as my career advanced and I started seeing patients from around the world I began to realize that most functional medicine practices were not helping their patients. Instead, I saw case after case where the fundamentals of healing were being missed because the doctor was treating inaccurate labs with piles of supplements. What is happening is that doctors are attending functional medicine education conferences that were underwritten by labs and supplement companies — and then making a lot of money selling labs and supplements.

Unfortunately, this means that while most functional medicine doctors have a ton of experience ordering unnecessary labs and selling supplements, they are very inexperienced at helping uncover the reasons why patients are sick.

In contrast, I’ve dedicated my medical career to figuring out what treatments help patients to heal and which do not. I’ve been able to do this because I see patients 3 days a week, which means I have 2 days a week to research, teach and mentor other physicians.
